Business Ownership vs. Being Owned by the Business
Sonitrol Tri-County is an Electronic Security Systems Company located in Metropolitan Detroit, Flint Michigan and Chicago Illinois. The business has been operational for years and was stable but looking to grow and expand their capabilities. The owner, having many years of industry experience wanted to engage his management team so they could take greater ownership of the daily operations of the business success. In order to accomplish this objective the owner with the assistance of JKL associates determined a game plan that started with defining the strategies for the business and the supporting business objectives that would need to be executed to realize this direction.
Initially, JKL Associates met with the owner and members of the existing staff to capture details of the present business situation and culture of the organization. This information would be vital in uncovering and prompting dialogue to focus the business in the direction of its leadership team. This part of the process also refined who would be part of the strategic planning process to define the next stage of development for the organization.
JKL Associates facilitated a detailed strategic planning process to craft a future years plan to realize the owners’ vision. The team of existing management personnel that were assembled worked through crafting the vision/mission for the organization along with strategic imperative, key business goals, metrics to progress the plan and the necessary development investment to bring the plan to fruition.
One of the outcomes from the planning process was that the existing team needed leadership and management development. The sales team also needed additional sales training. JKL Associates at the conclusion of the strategic planning process then directed its services to fulfill the gap in the management, leadership and sales training. This was accomplished through some formal education sessions, audio materials, assessments, one on one coaching and other learning processes. One area that evolved was accountability for goals and objectives that caused the sorting out of long-term team players and the need to acquire new talent for the organization.
As part of this ongoing development effort, JKL Associates was able to assist Sonitrol Tri-County in the identification of critical talent competencies necessary for success in a variety of position and job roles in the organization. With the use of business processes and assessments, JKL Associates enables the hiring of talent to meet with the business culture and demands the job has to provide contribution to the organizations goals and objectives.
As a result of ownership being disciplined to engage the leadership team, Sonitrol’s owner currently enjoys a quality leadership team that takes the daily operation off his plate allowing him to continue to navigate the business on the large picture and affording him the time to plan future objectives and business results.
